Shaw Guild Code of Conduct (Effective January 2026)

Being a volunteer for the Shaw Festival is both rewarding and fun. It’s a chance to share in the magic of theatre. It also comes with a sense of duty and responsible behaviour. Shaw volunteers are part of the Shaw Festival and work in concert with all Shaw departments. Principles and expectations for how volunteers operate are listed below.

Respect

Everyone should be treated fairly, equally and respectfully.

•  Approach all patrons, Shaw employees and volunteers with courtesy and dignity.

•  Avoid insensitive or offensive language.

•  Never try to impose your personal beliefs related to faith, life or culture on patrons or colleagues.

Camaraderie

Harassment at the Guild is not tolerated.

•  Harassment includes offending or humiliating someone physically or verbally, threatening or intimidating someone, making unwelcome jokes.

•  Volunteers are expected to share duties equally on site. There is no ‘boss’ (one exception is the docent program where prior to each tour, a lead is designated, and this person takes on additional functions for the group).

Timeliness

Volunteers are expected to be ready for duty at the start time of their shift time and stay for the full length of their shift.

•   In certain situations, unique guidelines may be provided by group Chairs, which must be observed.

Dress Code

Volunteers in roles that interact with patrons are expected to dress in business casual attire and follow the Shaw Festival’s scent-free environment policy.

No Alcohol or Recreational Drugs

The consumption of alcohol, marijuana or any form of non-prescription drugs is a personal matter; however, in line with Shaw Festival policies, it is required that volunteers arrive for work capable of performing their duties.

•  Volunteers cannot consume alcohol, marijuana products or recreational drugs during their duties or arrive for work while under the influence of alcohol, marijuana or any drug that could compromise the safety of themselves or others.

•  There are occasions when the Shaw Festival and Shaw Guild sponsor social functions for volunteers. Volunteers are expected to exercise moderation.

Health & Safety

Always work to the best of your ability and be aware of your own strengths and weaknesses.

•  Do not volunteer for duties that pose a health or safety risk to you or others.

•  Observe safe work habits and be aware of the safety of others while on duty.

•  Follow the instructions of Shaw managers regarding safety protocols and procedures.

No Gratuities

Receiving personal tips for services is not permitted.

•  Volunteers are expected to strongly discourage patrons from offering personal tips however, should a patron insist, please ask them to donate directly to the Shaw.
